Summer / Fall Activities

Swim in the Dorset Quarry or tube down the Battenkill on a hot summer day or visit Emerald Lake State Park some 5 miles north and swim in the crystal waters by the sandy beach or rent a kayak or paddle boat or rent a paddle boat or enjoy a picnic…or if you do not want to venture far... our heated pool (Needs to link to outdoor pool photo) is right outside your door!

Play golf or tennis at The Manchester Country Club or practice your drive with a bucket of balls at The Practice Tee just down the road.

Take a BackRoad Discovery Tour on some of the lesser known roads of Southern Vermont and learn some of the local history as well as enjoying the spectacular scenery of our beautiful state.

Visit a local working farm….Taylor Farms in Londonderry where they make their famous Smoked Gouda or the Merck Forest and Farmland Center a 60 acre organic farm with both livestock and gardens that offer seasonal events, programs and celebrations and miles of hiking trails.

Drive to the top of Mount Equinox for a fantastic view of Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. At the summit, take a short hike to Lookout Rock for a bird’s eye view of Manchester.

Canoe down the Battenkill

Rent a bike and take a ride. On road or off there are plenty of beautiful rides in and around Manchester. Rentals are available at Battenkill Sports and Bike Shop

Visit Historic Hildene, the summer estate of Robert Todd Lincoln, the only surviving child of President Abraham Lincoln. The beautiful mansion is open for tours year-round. Walking trails wind through the beautiful grounds and gardens…in June the peonies are spectacular! There are many special programs and events throughout the year.

Visit the Northshire Bookstore, a dream destination for the whole family, with books, music, dvds, games, toys, events for everyone year round and a floor devoted to children. Enjoy a cappuccino or sandwich or homemade soup at The Spiral Press Café.

Stroll through the art galleries at The Southern Vermont Arts Centeror have lunch in the Sculpture Garden. In the evening enjoy one of the many concerts or special events held throughout the year. Enjoy world class performances and award winning dramas at the local Dorset Theatre during the summer Dorset Theatre Festival. Relax before the performance with a plate of tapas, and a glass of wine or beer in the gallery cafe. The Weston Playhouse is another local theatre where you can enjoy excellent off-Broadway entertainment.

Go horseback riding through the Vermont countryside at Mountain View Ranch in Danby or Horses For Hire in Peru.

Listen to a concert by The Vermont Symphony Orchestra or The Manchester Music Festival.

Gather the kids and head up to Bromley’s Adventure Park where you can ride the Alpine Slide. The Sun Mountain Flyer, New England’s longest Zip Rider, The Big Splash Water Ride or any of the other many attractions and rides both there and at the new Bromley Aerial Park, where you can explore 65 elements over 5 courses for unlimited fun. No inside voices required here – Bromley Adventure and Aerial Parks are Vermont’s best summer outdoor experience!

Ride the Gondola to the summit of Stratton Mountain.

Shopping at the many Designer Outlet Shops, sampling the confections at Mother Myrick’s or The Manchester Country Store, and many of the fine locally owned specialty shops in town.
Meander through one of the area’s Farmers’ Markets to find the freshest locally grown produce and Vermont-made products.

Be sure to visit The Vermont Country Store in Weston, an authentic country store with practical and hard to find goods.

Spend some time or even compete at the Vermont Summer Horse Festival. A world class horse show in the foothills of the Green Mountains.

Winter / Spring Activities

Take a Horse Drawn Sleigh Ride through the fields and mountains with Mountain View Ranch, Taylor Farms, Pfister Farms or Horses For Hire.

Downhill Skiing or Snowboarding is fun for everyone! Whether you are a beginner or expert we have terrain for everyone. Get more information on lifts, lessons and rental equipment at Bromley, Stratton or Magic Mountains.

Get a sled and go sailing down Burr and Burton Hill (our local High School). Bring your own or get one at The Mountain Goat, RK Miles or Eastern Mountain Sports.

Go Cross Country Skiing at Robert Todd Lincoln’s Hildene, Wild Wings, Viking Ski Touring Center, or Merck Forest.

Skate on the ice at Riley Rink or catch a Hockey Game. Snowmobile at Stratton Mountain.

And best of all sit in front of your blazing fire and enjoy a book from The Northshire Bookstore.
